To fuel your desire for an intense blood pumping dance battle, head to the city nearest you for In10sity Dance regional competitions. In 2017 they toured to 26 cities across the United States, hosting 398 studios, comprised of over 12,000 dancers. They awarded $100,000 in cash and gave over $200,000 in scholarships, which is certainly a great feat; however they couldn’t refer to themselves as intense if they didn’t strive for more!
Each year they plan on getting bigger and better by helping even more dancers turn their dreams into a reality. They do this by offering an improvisational competition, eliminating time restraints for routines, and contracting the most widely respected judges in the business. These judges acknowledge excellence and offer constructive, individually tailored feedback for every routine. Confident in their product, In10sity guarantees their competition will be one of the most rewarding experiences a dancer can have. At In10sity, “it’s more than a competition, it’s an experience.”
Put those stop watches away, and enjoy the show
In regards to time limits, In10sity Dance has a unique outlook…Dancing is an expressive art form, much like painting, sculpting, cooking, etc. Limiting dances down to the second would be like telling a painter he needs to be done in an hour, or telling a chef preparing braised short rib they have 15 minutes. Therefore, rather than enforce time limitations, they offer suggestions for time limits as follows; Solos: 3 minutes, Duets & Trios: 3 minutes, Small Groups: 3 minutes, Large Groups & Lines: 4 minutes, Productions: 7 minutes.
To be clear, you will not see judges or directors holding stop watches, timing each performance, nor will you see points deducted on the score card for running over time. In10sity assumes the choreographers have a good grasp of how long it takes to make an impression and will use their best judgment in composing pieces that do just that.
Get the creative juices flowing in time for improv
Each competition needs an added component that separates them from the rest, and the Improv Competition is exactly that for In10sity. At every regional event, this competition is scheduled before the awards ceremony, and it is formatted in a similar fashion to auditions. Dancers are divided by age category, assigned a number to perform their improvisation routine, and are called on stage in groups of 3-10 to show the judges what they came up with. Following the preliminary, semi-final, and final rounds, the adjudicators determine the top 3 competitors. These competitors receive scholarship awards to In10sity Dance’s workshop circuit, The In10sive!
This Improv Competition is a great way to observe how well students compose themselves under the pressure of creating original, show stopping choreography. To find a city nearest you (like Charlotte, NC) where you can flaunt your skills in improv and much more, please see the end of the article.

In10sity’s age and class divisions
In10sity’s competitions include 5 age divisions ranging from Mini (8 years old and younger) to Adult (20 years and older). To determine the age division for multiple dancers, calculate their average age as of January 1st . If there is a decimal point, drop it, and round down to the nearest whole number.
In addition to age divisions, In10sity has 3 competitive class divisions; Debut, Premier and Elite. The criterion is based on experience, therefore dancers with little to no experience should register in the Debut class, and classes get more advanced from there. Placement in these classes is determined by the teachers, not the In10sity staff. The goal is for students to compete against other dancers of similar skill, so the competition becomes a challenging learning experience, not an easy win. The class division is not designed for studio directors to register highly experienced dancers in a lower level class, so please honor your dancers and place them where they should be.
Are you intense enough to be an In10se dancer?
During regionals, the judges select outstanding soloists from the Elite and Premier levels, in the Teen and Senior age divisions as In10se Dancers. Winners are awarded the opportunity to perform in the opening number of the Group Finale at Nationals. The routine is choreographed by top industry professionals, and dancers should maximize their time with these professionals by asking questions about the industry. To be fair to all studios, those who do not have solo performers may nominate two performers each in the Teen and Senior age divisions to participate as In10se Dancers at Nationals.
New offering for the upcoming seasons
In10sity Dance is excited to introduce their unique twist to a title competition–the Con10tion program! At each regional competition, they announce a Mini, Junior, Teen, and Senior contender. This contender has the chance to represent their regional win at the Orlando, FL Nationals and compete for the title of In10sity Dance National Con10der. Dancers wishing to compete in Con10tion must register one of their solo performances into the program. In addition, they must participate in the In10se Improv competition offered at regionals. In order to be named the Con10der at Nationals, a dancer has to place within the top three of their respective In10se Improv competition. They must also have the highest scoring solo among all solos registered in the program. This will not be an easy task, but is perfect for dancers craving that title.
With new additions to their program and increasing attendance year after year, In10sity Dance is on the road to becoming one of the most nationally recognized dance competitions. Their Improv Competition is loved by students due to the freedom it provides in an otherwise tightly planned and rehearsed environment. Additionally, their outlook on time restraints is almost unheard in competitive dance, but proves that they value dance as true art, not something that can be easily rushed. As they say, “it’s more than a competition, it’s an experience,” and an experience they want every dedicated, competitive dancer to have.
