The Alamo

San Antonio is called Alamo City for a reason. The Alamo is the heart of San Antonio and Texas’s most-visited landmark. The historic significance of this hallowed ground is what attracts tourists from around the country.

The Battle of the Alamo was a tragic but pivotal event in the 1835 Texas Revolution. The battle between the Republic of Texas and Mexico took place from February 23, 1836 to March 6, 1836. Texan soldiers held down the fort for as long as possible before the Mexican army overpowered them completely.

Although the Battle of the Alamo was ultimately unsuccessful, the death of these soldiers was not in vain. They are considered American heroes who died fighting and refused to give up even when victory was impossible. The Alamo serves to keep their memories alive.

Children may not fully understand the significance of the Alamo, but they can still have an enjoyable time. The Alamo features free and family-friendly activities daily, as well as informative guided tours.

Outside the Alamo there are seating areas and a large, green lawn. Visitors have commented on the beautifully maintained grounds surrounding the building.  It’s a nice place to take a peaceful moment to reflect on a place that was once filled with turmoil.

San Antonio Riverwalk

The San Antonio Riverwalk is the most picturesque part of San Antonio, and is only 24 minutes from Alamo City All-Stars Sportsplex. The Riverwalk is peacefully tucked away a few feet down from street level. Large trees line the sparkling water and provide shade for everyone walking along. The San Antonio Riverwalk spans 15 miles through the city and offers innumerable attractions along the way.

Many shops and delicious restaurants with outdoor patios sit along the river. Guest can check out everything from art galleries to landmarks like the Alamo. In addition to strolling along this treasure, you have the option to take a guided boat tour. These tours float down the Riverwalk, sharing the history and a unique view of San Antonio.

In addition to shops and galleries, La Villita Historic Arts Village regularly holds festivals like the Starving Artist Art Show. This is the village’s longest running arts festival, and it takes place every April. More than 150 artists from all over Texas gather to showcase their creations during this incredible event.

Tower of the Americas

The best view of San Antonio is atop the Tower of the Americas in Hemisfair Park. This impressive landmark was built for the World’s Fair in 1968 and remains a popular tourist attraction to this day.

The Tower of the Americas brings guests 750 feet into the air and rotates slowly to provide a 360-degree view. Visitors can also enjoy a delicious meal during their visit. Inside the Tower of the Americas is Chart House, a restaurant and bar unlike any other in San Antonio. Pearl District

Pearl District in San Antonio, 22 minutes from Alamo City All-Stars Sportsplex, is one of the fastest-growing destinations in the city. This trendy area is gaining popularity due in part to the Pearl Brewery.

This brewery building was created in the early 1880s and once employed hundreds of local citizens. Since then, the Pearl Brewery complex has grown into a dynamic gathering place. Locals are drawn to its large food hall, artisan shops, and widely celebrated farmer’s market. It’s the kind of place where you can expect live music, locally sourced food, lively bars, and outdoor areas to relax in while kids splash in the water features.

This Pearl Brewery complex is just part of what makes the Pearl District great. The area is home to a recently developed part of the San Antonio Riverwalk called Museum Reach. This 1.33-mile stretch of the river features the Witte Museum, San Antonio Zoo, San Antonio Museum of Art, and Brackenridge Park. Multiple pedestrian bridges cross over the Museum Reach area, providing visitors easy access to the entire area.

Brackenridge Park

Brackenridge Park is a popular destination for both locals and visitors. This 343-acre park has sat right along the San Antonio Riverwalk for centuries. There is evidence that the area was occupied as early as 11,000 years ago. This evidence includes Native American artifacts from 9200 B.C. that were found on the property. Even after thousands of years, Brackenridge Park still serves as a gathering place for the Alamo City.

Take a 23-minute trip to the massive Brackenridge Park, which is filled with attractions. The park features playgrounds, pools, picnic areas, a botanic garden, museums, and more. You can spend the day hiking, biking, birdwatching, or playing a pickup game. The park also contains Brackenridge Golf Course, one of the oldest golf courses in Texas.

Not only can you take part in these activities, but attend events as well. Brackenridge Park hosts free yoga each Saturday morning and events such as “Paint the Park.” In this annual tradition, artists set up canvases throughout Brackenridge Park and paint the many landmarks inside.

Of all these activities and events, the two biggest attractions in Brackenridge Park are the San Antonio Zoo and the storied Japanese Tea Garden.

Japanese Tea Garden

The Japanese Tea Garden, located inside Brackenridge Park, is a serene escape from the rest of the city. It was created in the 1900s and delights guests to this day. Enjoy the tranquility of features like stone arches, koi ponds, flowers, and waterfalls.

In the 1990s, the beautiful park was neglected and fell into disrepair. The city considered demolishing the entire thing, but because of public outcry, they restored the park instead. San Antonio had completely revitalized The Japanese Tea Garden by 2005, bringing it back to its original glory.

Since then, this beloved destination has been added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and named a Texas Civil Engineering Landmark and a Registered Texas Historic Landmark.

San Fernando Cathedral

The San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio was built in 1738, making it the oldest active Roman Catholic church in the country.

This church has stood the test of time and even sustained damage during the Battle of the Alamo. Visitors can still see the char marks left on the outside walls of the San Fernando Cathedral. Many Texan soldiers lost their lives during this battle, and their bodies have been laid to rest in the church.
