Experience horseback riding at its finest! Whether you’re just getting your kids started horseback riding or bringing the pro moves, the Red Ridge Ranch has you covered. Situated with a beautiful view of the Lemonwier River, Red Ridge offers one-hour trail rides through hundreds of acres of rolling farmland and wooded hills. The owners believe that healthy, well-trained horses yield safe, enjoyable rides for everybody from beginner to advanced rider. Castle Rock Park

Swim, canoe, or water ski, at the Juneau County Castle Rock Park, which spreads out in a scenic, wooded area from the 16,000-acre Castle Rock Lake. The park itself takes up 160 acres and sports 300 camping sites, 150 with electrical hookups. Sites all have picnic tables and fire rings. The little ones can cavort on the playground equipment. Yellow River State Wildlife Area

Also located on Castle Rock Lake 15 miles north of the Mauston Sports Complex is the Yellow River Wildlife Area, a 2,200-acre area next to Buckhorn State Park and the Buckhorn Wildlife Area. The property sits in a transition zone between the southern hardwood forests and the northern conifer-hardwood forests. The wildlife area comprises a forest of green ash, swamp white oak, silver maple, and river birch. The canopy is made up of red maple, red oak, box elder, yellowbud hickory, American elm, and black ash. The low sandy ridges show even more of the variety of trees in the area, including black cherry and white pine. The meandering river creates oxbow lakes, “running sloughs”, and small ponds in floodplain. Quincy Bluff and Wetlands

20 miles east of the Mauston Sports Complex is Quincy Bluff and Wetlands, a landscape-scale natural area that shows off almost everything your kids’ science teacher would want them to sample on a trip to the wilds of Wisconsin. Located in the Central Sand Plain ecoregion of Wisconsin, it sports pine barrens, sand prairie, mesic forest, and sedge meadow; it’s got it all! Other features include a wetland complex with low sandy ridges and seepage ponds between sandstone mesas and buttes rising up to 200 feet. Quincy Bluff itself rises 200 feet and extends for a couple miles of northern dry forest and “open cliff” communities. Lone Rock is an exceptional example of Driftless Area mesa, featuring 100-foot Cambrian sandstone cliffs. Check out the shrub layer made up of early low blueberry, American hazelnut, and huckleberry.
