St. Petersburg – Things to do with your Team

You might have already known that Florida’s nickname is “The Sunshine State”, but if your team is heading to St. Petersburg for a tournament you will be doubling up on sun.  Located in The Sunshine State is “The Sunshine City”.  St. Petersburg has been awarded this nickname because it holds the Guinness world record of having the most consecutive days of sunshine at 768!  Remember to bring your sunscreen and a hat and work on your tan while exploring all that St. Petersburg has to offer.

Fort De Soto Park

Florida is a state famous for its white, sandy beaches; it only makes sense that you spend some time at one.  Voted the number one beach in the United States, Fort De Soto Park is less than a half hour away from downtown St. Petersburg.  You won’t be able to resist lounging in the soft, warm, white sand or splash around in the bright, blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.  The park’s three miles of beaches are meticulously maintained so regardless of what part of the beach you end up at, it will be pristine.  Make a day out of it and bring a bagged lunch and eat on the beach or one of the park’s 15 picnic areas.  After stopping at Fort De Soto Park, your team won’t want to leave because of the outstanding beach.  You might just have to visit more than once during your trip. 3500 Pinellas Bayway S, Tierra Verde, FL 33715

Sawgrass Lake Park

A little less beach and a little more nature, Sawgrass Lake Park gives your team the opportunity to observe some of Florida’s wildlife in their natural habitat.  Venture on the mile long boardwalk and keep your eyes peeled because what you find might surprise you.  Winding throughout the park are thickets of trees, canals, and lakes, all teeming with animals.  Perhaps you will spot an elegant heron or fluttering butterfly, or maybe encounter something of the coldblooded variety like an alligator or turtle.  A boardwalk isn’t all Sawgrass Lake Park has to offer; check out their observation tower and education center to learn more about the park and the animals that inhabit it.  A picnic area is provided for relaxation and eating. 7400 25th St N, St. Petersburg, FL 33702

Take a trip through time and space and engross yourself in traveling among the constellations.  Explore the night’s sky from the comfort of your seat.  St. Petersburg College Planetarium and Observatory gives you the chance to view bright stars and revolving planets closer than you ever thought imaginable.  Depending on the time of year you visit, the planetarium will have one of three shows playing on their 24ft domed ceiling: Stars of the Summer, Legends of the Fall, or Yuletide Skies.  Try and get there Friday night if you can because the planetarium offers two free showings.  Because the auditorium only seats 46, it is advised you call ahead if planning to bring a large group.  Their observatory is also open to the public.  Here you can look through a reflecting telescope and gaze at real stars and planets. 6605 5th Ave N, St. Petersburg, FL 33710
